SPONSORED BY TEDX ROYAL TUNBRIDGE WELLS

TEDxRoyal Tunbridge Wells Live is coming this November, and we’re excited to announce two workshops today exclusively on TW Life! Alongside Louise Dean’s workshop exploring your inner artist, and Afsar Ali’s photowalk across the centre of Tunbridge Wells, we’re bringing you two sessions from Jen Fordham and Lizzie Bentley Bowers.

Jen’s workshop, Harnessing Nerves In The Spotlight, is all about those moments when you’re speaking up in a meeting, or having a challenging conversation with a colleague or friend. What do you do when those jitters hit, and you’re not sure how to handle them? Jen’s workshop focuses on practical techniques for confidence and credibility when all eyes in the room are on you, backed up by Jen’s experience as a Performance Coach and two decades working in theatre.

Lizzie’s session, How To Take A Compliment, looks at how we can often fail to take in compliments, and why we find them so hard to hold. This Strengths based workshop will give you the skills so that the next time someone says something nice about you, you believe it and hold on to it. As well as being one of the co-curators of TEDxRoyal Tunbridge Wells, Lizzie holds an MSc in Positive Psychology, and is the author of the Strength Stackers Journal and the recently released “Good-Bye”.

There are fewer than 40 seats left, and once they’re gone, they’re gone. Don’t miss the chance to learn directly from experts in confidence, performance, and mindset. Book your spot now at tedxrtw.com/live before they sell out.

THE BRIEF

Landmark Replaced: Hermes House on St John’s Road could soon be demolished to make way for a 55-bedroom rehab and recovery centre. Renaiss Health plans to build a short-stay facility offering physiotherapy, 24-hour nursing, and a hydrotherapy pool. Their aim is to help post-surgery patients regain mobility and free up NHS beds. The multi-million scheme would create 88 jobs and replace the former Logistics UK headquarters. The historic 1931 building, once a Christian Science Church, narrowly missed protected status in 2022. Star Visits Local Cafe: Actor James Norton, best known for Happy Valley, McMafia, and Netflix’s House of Guinness, surprised staff at Basil café last week. The 40-year-old stopped by for coffee after completing a parkrun in Pevensey, taking time to chat and pose for photos with thrilled employees. Manager Jan Gabriel said she recognised him instantly and described him as “down to earth” and “really friendly.” Read more here by Cara Simmonds.

Lorry Mini-Golf: Three Kent-based creators, known online as the Professional Idiots, have transformed a 60ft lorry into what they claim is the world’s first mobile mini golf course. The nine-hole, jungle-themed “Pukka Putters” features a bar and LED lighting. It was parked outside the Amelia Scott Centre until Sunday and is now on the North Farm Industrial Estate. The trio, Maddy Harris and brothers Toby and Josh Jones, previously went viral for turning a double-decker bus into a coffee shop. Their next project? Secretly renovating their parents’ Pembury home. Read more here from Hannah Roe.

Local Asylum Plans: Crowborough Town Council says the Home Office plans to use Crowborough Army Camp as temporary asylum accommodation for up to 12 months from late November. Up to 600 single adult men will arrive in phases (no more than 90 a week). Clearsprings Ready Homes will run the site with 24/7 security, a no-alcohol policy, and a GP-led service to limit pressure on local NHS provision. The Council can’t decide usage but will push for updates and share news with residents. Read more here.

Autumnal Hygge: Autumn in Tunbridge Wells just got cosier. Jazz singer Jenny Maslin returns to Charlie Moore’s zero-waste café on Camden Road for her monthly Jazz Kitchen night this Friday. Expect warm lights, vegetarian food, a licensed bar, and mellow jazz with pianist John Harriman. With only 22 tickets available, it’s the perfect way to escape the November chill and embrace a little local hygge. Read more here from Jenny Maslin.
