THE BRIEF

🍩New Shops: Three new retailers opened in Tunbridge Wells last week, bringing fresh options to Royal Victoria Place and Ely Court. Mr Simms Sweet Shop, known for its nostalgic charm, will open on 8th May in the Fiveways mall, offering traditional sweets in a vintage-style setting. Joining the mix at Ely Court are Face Workshop, a medical aesthetics clinic, and Sumo Donuts, known for its bold flavours and small-batch craftsmanship. The new additions add to the growing diversity of independent businesses in the area. Read more from Index Digital.

🚌Wrong Way: A Stagecoach bus driver has been issued a traffic offence report after allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road and running a red light in Tunbridge Wells. The incident occurred around 8am on 28th April near Grosvenor Road. Stagecoach has launched a full investigation, emphasising its commitment to passenger and road user safety. 🚨Strangled Out Of Anger: A man accused of murder told police he strangled his victim out of anger, a jury at Maidstone Crown Court has heard. Stephen Castle, 59, of Kipping's Cross, denies murder but admits manslaughter, claiming he acted in a fit of rage after blaming Wayne Woodgate for a past police raid. Woodgate, 54, was last seen getting into a van with Castle in Tunbridge Wells on 17th October 2024, before his body was found six days later in Peasmarsh, East Sussex. The trial continues. 🚿5-Months Of Closures: Residents in Tunbridge Wells face five months of road closures as SGN begins phase one of its project to replace 3.5km of gas mains along Upper Grosvenor Road. The works, part of a 30-year plan to replace ageing metal pipes with modern plastic alternatives, will involve rolling closures from North Farm Road to Grosvenor Bridge. SGN expects to return in 2026 for phase two. Read more from Jacob Panons here.

👩‍🏫Cheating Teacher: A former senior teacher at Skinners' Kent Academy in Tunbridge Wells has been banned from classrooms after providing GCSE students with answers during their French speaking exams in 2022. Louisa Yakit, head of modern foreign languages, reportedly allowed pupils to see prepared responses and provided verbal prompts. Despite testimony to her positive teaching record, the misconduct panel found her actions were a clear breach of examination rules. Ms Yakit can apply for the ban to be lifted in 2027.
