THE BRIEF
⛪HGV Damage: Lorries are jamming Goudhurst’s narrow A262, damaging cars, homes and even the village church. Now Tunbridge Wells MP Mike Martin has launched a petition urging sat-nav firms to stop sending HGVs through the small Kent village. Campaigners say the chaos has gone on for years, with residents facing daily delays and dangers. Google responded that its maps are for standard vehicles, advising lorry drivers to use specialist tools. Locals argue safer, faster routes already exist via the M20 and A228. Read more from Jacob Panons and Lauren Collins here.
🎽500 Parkruns: Dunorlan Park was alive with colour and celebration as Royal Tunbridge Wells parkrun marked its 500th event. Since launching in 2014, nearly 15,000 people have taken part, covering close to 100,000 finishes. Dame Kelly Holmes joined the milestone run, praising the community spirit at its heart. A record 486 participants and 71 volunteers made the day one to remember, with fancy dress, cake, and plenty of smiles. Next week promises more milestones, including the 15,000th participant. Read the full report by Richard Nash here.
☕Cafe Lounge Opening: A new café is set to open in the former P and R Italian Shop on Mount Pleasant Road, just steps from the precinct in Tunbridge Wells town centre. Run by Café Lounge Kent, the venue will sit beside Burger King and opposite Cup 109. Plans show a Grade II-listed site with tiled floors, light-coloured walls, a breakfast bar, and tables for two and four, with kitchen space in the basement. The opening adds to the growing cluster of food and drink spots in the area. Read more from Mary Harris here.
🏖️Eastbourne Bus Petition: A petition to restore the half-hourly number 51 bus between Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells will be considered next week. The service, cut to hourly in March, is vital for people in Hailsham and Heathfield. Started by student Erin Wigham, the petition has over 1,700 signatures. But county council officers warn Stagecoach already runs the route at a heavy loss, and further subsidies would threaten other services. Timetable tweaks aimed at improving punctuality are also due later this month. Read more from Huw Oxburgh here.
🧳Luxury Travel Firm Opens: Ashdown Travel has opened a new Tunbridge Wells branch as part of a shift towards the luxury travel market. The expansion, which also includes a forthcoming Sevenoaks shop, follows the recruitment of 10 former Baldwins Travel staff. Head of retail Tricia Lester said the agency, founded in Oxted 40 years ago, is getting “a whole new look” with revamped interiors, a new logo and the strapline: Your adventure. Our expertise. The Tunbridge Wells store had a soft launch on 2nd September, with its official opening later this month. Read more from Andrew McQuarrie here.
