A MESSAGE FROM KENT RELIEF

KentRelief (Charity number 1204501) are planning our next truck of humanitarian aid to Ukraine in September/October. This includes life saving firefighting equipment given to us by our partner charity FireAid, as well as food, medical supplies and other key aid. We are low on funds to cover the costs of the truck to Lviv, and the onward delivery from there to our beneficiaries in the East and South of Ukraine. Our last consignment costs were £3,900. If anyone is able to help towards these costs, you can donate in various ways:

By bank transfer:

Account Name: KentRelief

Account Number: 44520968

Sort code: 30-99-50

You can also donate to us via the Charities Aid Foundation:

THE BRIEF

🏠Plans for 500 Homes: More than 500 new homes could be built on farmland east of Paddock Wood, alongside a healthcare facility and local centre. Developer Dandara South East plans for 40% of the 520 homes to be affordable. The site, the size of 64 football pitches, faces flooding risks that have already shaped the proposals. Councillor Adrian Pitts called the scheme “very key” for the town but stressed the need for infrastructure first. An Environmental Impact Assessment scoping report has been submitted, with a full application yet to come. Read more from Daniel Esson here.

🚌An Insight Into Dementia: Home Instead Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks and Edenbridge hosted the Virtual Dementia Tour at their Hawkenbury branch on 31st July. Delivered by Training 2 Care, the experience gave people an insight into living with dementia and how small changes can make a big difference. Registered Manager Emily Blioja said it was “invaluable training” for Care Pros and families. This was the second time the Dementia Bus has visited, with plans for a third if interest continues. Pop-up coffee and chat sessions are also being planned. Read more here.

☕Jamaica Blue: Coffee lovers in Tunbridge Wells will soon have a new spot to try as Jamaica Blue prepares to open at Royal Victoria Place shopping centre. The café chain, already in Maidstone, Medway and Bromley, serves freshly made hot and cold drinks alongside all-day breakfasts, bagels, sandwiches and vegan options. Known for using premium ingredients and exclusive Blue Mountain coffee from Jamaica, the brand has already received a warm welcome from locals. An exact launch date is yet to be confirmed. Read more from Sam Honey here.

🍰The Little Shed: Joe Glenister, owner of The Cake Shed in Tunbridge Wells, has opened a second café in his hometown of Maidstone. The Little Shed has taken over a former deli in Penenden Heath, transformed into a cosy green-toned spot serving breakfasts, bagels, cakes and more. Joe, who studied biochemistry before moving into hospitality, spent 12 weeks gutting and refurbishing the site with help from friends and family. Despite roadworks affecting trade, the café has already gained regulars and Joe has ambitions to grow further. Read more from Davina Jethwa here.

📉Penshurst Plummets: House prices have fallen sharply in some of Kent’s most desirable areas over the past year. Penshurst (TN11) saw the steepest drop, down 20.9% to an average of £642,976, while Langton Green (TN3) fell 20% to £742,464. Sandwich and Swanscombe also recorded double-digit declines. At the other end, Queenborough remains Kent’s cheapest spot with homes averaging £224,167, while Riverhead tops the table at £869,163. Use the interactive map to see price changes for every postcode.
