New Art Festival in Pantiles
The new Art of the Pantiles Festival will celebrate the artisan culture of the area. The free event will be on 21-22 September. Organised by the Royal Tunbridge Wells Art Society, the festival plans to feature art in various forms.
Activities include ceramics, sewing, poetry and stained glass. It will also include competitions, workshops, and stalls, with entertainment from the Bandstand.
Local businesses and volunteers are supporting the event, aiming to attract visitors and benefit local traders. RTW Together Business Improvement District planned the festival and are seeking sponsorship from local businesses.
Hever Castle Theatre's Resilient Year
On 19th July 2023, a storm damaged The Festival Theatre at Hever Castle beyond repair. Despite this setback, the theatre continued its performances across various castle grounds. Hever emphasises the large role the support from staff and audiences played in their ability to continue.
One year later, the theatre commemorates this resilience with a special performance of Jeeves & Wooster. The new theatre structure ensures a comfortable and enchanting experience for all attendees.
Villages Demand A262 Downgrade
Kent residents have petitioned to downgrade the "dangerous" A262. The people of Biddenden, Sissinghurst, and Goudhurst want it downgraded to a B road. They cite increasing HGV traffic and speeding. Sarah Power from Goudhurst warned of potential fatalities. Lorries have previously struck her house.
Kevin Rampling of TAG A262 highlighted frequent accidents and traffic issues. Sarah Banbery from Biddenden expressed safety concerns for schoolchildren. Kent County Council will review the petition. They note a downgrade alone won't restrict HGV usage without additional traffic regulations.
Fake Parking Fines Alert
Drivers in Tunbridge Wells are being targeted by scammers issuing fake penalty charge notices. Areas include Broadwater Down, Mount Sion, and Goods Station Road. The fraudulent notices demand £120 or £60 if paid within seven days.
The council have warned residents not to follow payment instructions. They've asked people to report the fake fines to Action Fraud. The council also reported incidents in other areas. They advise people not to click on any links or QR codes on the notices.
Whooping Cough Surge in Tunbridge Wells
Tunbridge Wells has seen a significant rise in whooping cough cases. There were 393 suspected cases in Kent this year and 77 in Tunbridge Wells. The UKHSA reported 4,610 alerts in June, driven by falling vaccination rates.
Nine infant deaths have occurred since November. This emphasises the need for timely vaccination in pregnant women and children. The UKHSA urges vaccination to protect vulnerable infants.
Tunbridge Wells Maternity Negligence Payouts
Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust paid £20 million in negligence claims. Kent and Medway Trust paid £76 million in total. The claims relate maternity and childbirth failings since 2019.
Following a Freedom of Information request, the trusts issued an apology. They pledged to improve safety moving forward. The CQC rated the Tunbridge Wells maternity service as "inadequate". The trust says its addressing these issues as a priority.
